As of the time I'm writing this I have seen one episode of Star Trek in my life. That was several years ago.
Everything I know about the series comes from cultural osmosis and Futurama. I know that the show takes place in the future where the Starship Enterprise travels the universe encountering aliens. There's Captain Kirk who's the suave womanizing leader, Dr. Spock, the cold and logical Vulcan first mate, Dr. McCoy who has all the fun catchphrases, Scotty who is sometimes fat, Dr. Sulu who takes up half of my Facebook wall because my friends share every last thing he posts, and Uhura, who's purpose I really can't say. They run into bad guys like Tribbles, the Borg, Klingons, and the occasional gaseous orb. That's about it.
Then there's the Next Generation and movies and Shatner yelling "KHAN" and all that, but that's pretty much the extent of my knowledge. Oh, and something about whales.
Although, I also know that it has been one of the most culturally important shows in the history of television. It has spawned numerous sequel series, conventions, nerd stereotypes, and helped to change the face of science fiction forever. It also managed to touch on social and racial issues in the 1960s in a way that had never been so provocative and widely seen before. So I should probably see this at some point.
I'm not exactly sure what my format will be. Perhaps it will be episodic, or maybe I will cover multiple episodes in a single post. Maybe I will come up with a template for my reviews, or maybe I will just spew my thoughts out as they flow. Hell, I'm not even sure if I'm going to like it or hate it. The only thing I can say for certain is that I'll be tackling this at my leisure.
All in all, I hope it will be an enjoyable and enriching experience. Time to take on the final frontier.
